Verdict: Weighing in at around 300 grams (depending on size), the Rab Borealis Softshell Jacket is one of those versatile layers that punches well above its weight, at a decent price!

Inspired by the needs of alpine climbers and fast-moving adventure enthusiasts, the Borealis is one of Rab’s lightest softshells, yet it delivers surprisingly robust performance.

The jacket uses Matrix™ single-weave stretch fabric, which offers excellent wind resistance and quick-drying capabilities without compromising on breathability. It’s not fully waterproof, but it shrugs off light showers and dries fast, making it ideal for spring through early autumn conditions or as a dependable layer for active pursuits in milder climates.

Where the Borealis really shines is in its cut and flexibility. Rab has designed it with a slim fit that sits close to the body but still allows for easy layering over a base layer or under a shell. The articulated sleeves and stretch fabric mean it moves with you, whether you’re reaching for a hold, scrambling up rough terrain, or cycling into the wind.

In terms of features, the jacket keeps things minimal and functional. You’ll find two harness-compatible chest pockets, which double as ventilation if needed. The elasticated cuffs and hem help seal in warmth, while the under-helmet hood adds a layer of wind protection without bulk. There's no excess, just enough to keep you covered without slowing you down.

Style-wise, the Borealis is understated but sharp. It comes in a range of earthy or bold colours, depending on the season, and looks equally at home on a mountain trail, climbing wall, or café stop. It compresses down small enough to fit in a side pocket of your pack, making it an easy grab-and-go piece for unpredictable conditions.

Overall, the Rab Borealis Softshell Jacket is a standout for anyone who values lightweight performance, freedom of movement, and practical design. It’s not built for extreme cold or heavy rain, but for everything in between, fast hikes, breezy crags, and shoulder-season adventures , it’s a trusted go-to. Whether you're a climber, fastpacker, or bikepacker, the Borealis hits that sweet spot between function and comfort with Rab’s signature alpine touch.
