Verdict: A versatile trail running shoe with a better environmental focus, the Nike ReactX Pegasus Trail 5 is great urban hiking shoe for those with wider feet who transition between road and moderate off-road terrain.

Building on its predecessors, the Nike ReactX Pegasus Trail 5 introduces several key enhancements designed to improve comfort, responsiveness, and sustainability.

The latest iteration features ReactX Foam in the midsole, providing a softer and more responsive cushioning than previous React foam, delivering a plush underfoot feel ideal for extended runs. An added benefit of the ReactX foam is its reduced environmental impact. Nike has engineered this material to offer improved performance while minimising its carbon footprint, aligning with the brand's sustainability initiatives.

The All Terrain Compound (ATC) outsole comes equipped with 3.2 mm lugs, ensuring reliable traction on roads and light trails, though it may not perform as well on highly technical terrains or muddy conditions (especially  more with the colour!).

The engineered mesh upper includes open holes to promote breathability and quick drainage, keeping feet cool and dry even in wet conditions. A newly introduced rocker sole geometry enhances heel-to-toe transitions, benefiting heel strikers and improving overall running efficiency. For a secure fit, the gusseted tongue and Flywire lacing system provide enhanced midfoot lockdown, with the tongue featuring 7.2 mm of padding for added comfort. Reflective circular details on the upper improve visibility in low-light conditions, making the shoe a safer choice for early morning or evening runs.

Ideal for runners who primarily train on roads but occasionally explore light trails, the Pegasus Trail 5 offers reliable cushioning and comfort over long distances on less technical terrain. However, for those tackling highly technical trails with obstacles like rocks and roots, it may lack the necessary grip and protection. The shoe’s slightly wider toe box accommodates broader feet, though runners with narrower feet might need to adjust the lacing for a more secure fit.
