Verdict: a compact and lightweight rope knife designed specifically for climbers, mountaineers, and rescue professionals, however can be used for a wide variety of adventures.

The Petzl Spatha rope knife features a stainless steel blade with a smooth and serrated edge, making it versatile for cutting through ropes and cordage with ease. The partially serrated section is particularly useful for slicing through thick or wet rope, ensuring a reliable cut in challenging conditions.

One of the standout features of the Spatha is its ergonomic design. The handle is made from durable, textured plastic, offering a secure grip even when wearing gloves. The large hole in the handle allows it to be easily attached to a carabiner, so it can be clipped onto a harness or gear loop for quick access.

The knife’s one-handed operation is a major advantage in high-risk environments. A notch in the blade allows for easy opening, even when wearing gloves, while a locking mechanism ensures the blade stays securely in place when in use. The knife is also designed to be opened and closed smoothly, without excessive force.

Weighing just 43 grams, the Spatha is extremely lightweight, making it an excellent addition to any climbing or rescue kit without adding unnecessary bulk. It is available in different colours, with the blue and yellow versions being the most common.

While the Petzl Spatha is not a heavy-duty survival knife, it excels in its intended role as a specialized rope-cutting tool. It’s an ideal choice for climbers, cavers, mountaineers, and rescue workers who need a reliable, lightweight, and easy-to-use knife that integrates seamlessly with their gear.
