Experiencing space in Copenhagen’s incredible Planetarium

The Planetarium in Copenhagen is an incredible destination for astronomy and space enthusiasts!

Opened in 1989, the Planetarium was built in honour of Tycho Brahe, the renowned Danish astronomer whose groundbreaking work in the 16th century laid the foundations for modern astronomy. The building is located beside Sankt Jørgens Lake, making it a striking architectural landmark with its cylindrical shape and futuristic design.

The centrepiece of the Planetarium is its awe-inspiring IMAX dome theatre, one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The curved screen and advanced sound system offer an immersive experience, where visitors can watch high-resolution films about space, nature, and science. Whether journeying through the solar system, exploring the distant galaxies, or diving into the mysteries of black holes, the theatre transports viewers to places beyond Earth, making science and space exploration visually captivating.

Apart from the IMAX shows, the Planetarium houses several permanent and temporary exhibitions focusing on various aspects of space, astronomy, and astrophysics. Notable exhibitions have included detailed explorations of the solar system, displays on black holes, and features on the latest space missions, including those of NASA and ESA. The interactive displays allow visitors to explore complex concepts such as gravitational waves, the formation of stars, and the life cycles of planets. There are also impressive models of spacecraft and the International Space Station (ISS), providing insight into the human aspect of space exploration.

In recent years, the Planetarium has hosted exhibitions like "The Milky Way – Our Home in the Universe", which focuses on our galaxy's structure and how it fits into the larger cosmos. There have also been displays commemorating significant space events, such as the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, featuring interactive content about lunar missions.

The Planetarium regularly organises events like stargazing evenings, lectures by astrophysicists, and space workshops for children and adults. It serves as both an educational hub and a source of inspiration for those fascinated by the mysteries of the universe.
