Summary: A great place with a fascinating history to overlook this beautiful city from!

Gediminas Tower, an iconic symbol of Vilnius, stands proudly atop Gediminas Hill, overlooking the city with a commanding presence. This historic tower is all that remains of the Upper Castle, which was part of a larger defensive complex built in the early 14th century by Grand Duke Gediminas, the founder of Vilnius. Gediminas Tower has become a symbol of Lithuanian statehood and resilience, representing the nation’s enduring history.

The tower, constructed from red brick, is a striking example of Gothic architecture. Over the centuries, it has undergone several reconstructions, but it retains its medieval charm. The tower's current structure, rebuilt in the early 15th century by Grand Duke Vytautas, includes three floors and a terrace, offering panoramic views of Vilnius. From this vantage point, visitors can see the Old Town, the Neris River, and the sprawling cityscape, making Gediminas Tower a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

Inside the tower, a small museum presents the history of the castle and the city. Exhibits include archaeological findings, models of the original castle, and historical artifacts that tell the story of Vilnius's development from a medieval settlement to a modern capital. The museum provides valuable insights into the cultural and historical significance of Gediminas Tower and its role in Lithuania’s national identity.

Gediminas Tower has played a central role in Lithuania’s history. It was here that the Lithuanian flag was first raised in 1919, symbolising the country’s independence from Russian rule. This act has been commemorated every year since Lithuania regained independence in 1990, with the flag-raising ceremony becoming a powerful symbol of national pride.

Today, Gediminas Tower is not only a historical monument but also a cultural symbol of Lithuania. It attracts countless visitors who come to learn about the country's past, enjoy the stunning views, and experience a piece of Lithuanian heritage. Whether viewed from afar as a part of Vilnius’s skyline or explored up close, Gediminas Tower continues to be a testament to the enduring spirit of Lithuania and its people.
