Having spent the last few years exploring Estonia in a tent with a bike, 2024 seemed like a good time to sample and document more of Estonia’s rich history particularly the ample manor houses and castles!

Kernu Manor, is located about 35 kilometres southwest of Tallinn, and a historical gem with a rich past that reflects the country’s aristocratic heritage.

This elegant manor house is nestled in the picturesque countryside of Harju County, making it a perfect destination for those looking to explore the charm of Estonia's rural landscapes while still being within easy reach of the capital (a one-hour bus ride will get you here).

The manor itself dates back to the 17th century, with the current neoclassical building constructed in the early 19th century, around 1810. Designed in the style typical of the Baltic German nobility, Kernu Manor has retained much of its historic character, offering visitors a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Estonia’s past aristocracy. The building's architecture features a prominent portico supported by Doric columns, a hallmark of neoclassical design, and is surrounded by expansive parklands that were once the pride of the estate.

One of the unique aspects of Kernu Manor is its connection to notable historical figures and events. Over the centuries, it has been owned by various noble families, including the von Maydells and the von Kotzebues, who played significant roles in Estonia's history. The manor also has a link to Russian Emperor Alexander I, who reportedly stayed there during his travels.

In recent years, Kernu Manor has undergone restoration to preserve its historic charm while adapting it for modern use. Today, the manor operates as a boutique hotel and event venue, offering a luxurious and tranquil retreat for guests. The beautifully restored interiors are furnished with period-appropriate decor, creating an atmosphere that transports visitors back to the manor's golden age. Guests can stay in elegantly appointed rooms, enjoy fine dining in the manor's restaurant, and explore the surrounding parklands.

The wellness centre at Kernu Manor is a key highlight of this estate, designed around the traditional Finnish sauna, a staple of Estonian and Nordic relaxation culture. A steam room and two Jacuzzis make it a sanctuary for guests seeking to escape the stresses of everyday life.

AS you might expect, Kernu Manor is also a popular venue for weddings, conferences, and cultural events, thanks to its idyllic setting and historical ambiance. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a lover of architecture, or simply looking for a peaceful escape near Tallinn, Kernu Manor offers a unique and memorable experience.
