Verdict: A great piece of cold-weather clothing that retains heat even when wet when weight is less of a problem!
The Icebreaker Men's 260 Tech Long Sleeve Half Zip Base Layer is a versatile and reliable mid or base layer designed for cold-weather adventures.
Made from 100% merino wool, it offers exceptional warmth, breathability, and a natural stink resistance. These qualities make it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, fatbiking, or mountaineering, where staying warm and comfortable is essential.
The midweight construction, with a fabric weight of 260 g/m² (hence the name), ensures that this base layer provides excellent insulation without compromising on comfort. Its slim fit, offset shoulder seams, and forward-set side seams are thoughtfully designed to enhance comfort and reduce chafing, especially when worn under a backpack. Additionally, the drop-tail hem provides extended coverage for added protection against the cold.
As a mid-layer, this base layer truly excels when weight is less of a concern, but durability and warmth are important. It’s robust enough to withstand frequent use in harsh environments, making it an excellent choice for multi-day expeditions or extreme conditions. The half-zip design adds an extra layer of versatility, enabling the wearer to regulate body temperature easily during periods of varying activity levels. With a weight of approximately 316 grams for a medium size, it’s slightly heavier than lighter alternatives but offers superior thermal efficiency and resilience.
Beyond performance, Icebreaker underscores its commitment to sustainability and ethical production. The merino wool used in the 260 Tech is sourced responsibly, ensuring high standards of animal welfare and environmental stewardship. The garment is designed for long-term use, maintaining its softness and structural integrity even after numerous washes, which enhances its value for eco-conscious adventurers.
The Icebreaker 260 Tech Long Sleeve is ideal for adventures when you need a dependable layer to keep you warm during slower activities in cold conditions. Whether used as a standalone piece in dry weather or layered under a shell in wetter environments, it delivers comfort, functionality, and durability. For those who prioritise warmth and hardwearing gear without compromising on quality, this mid layer is a standout choice.
