Hiking a lap of Fernworthy reservoir on Dartmoor

Fernworthy Reservoir in Dartmoor National Park near Chagford in Devon, is an incredible hike amidst the rugged beauty of one of England’s national parks.

Covering approximately 28 hectares (69 acres), this reservoir is a water source for the surrounding communities while offering visitors a calming mini-adventure in nature.

One of the highlights of Fernworthy Reservoir I found, is the picturesque walking path that loops around the lake. This well-defined track spans roughly 2.5 miles (4 kilometres), offering some incredible views!

 

As you set off on this path from the car park, you’re greeted by some incredible panoramas of open moorland, punctuated by clusters of ancient woodlands and towering granite tors, creating a landscape steeped in both natural beauty and history.

 

The walk around Fernworthy reservoir offers a delightful mix of easy hiking and moderate hills, making it accessible to individuals of varying fitness levels. Along the way, you’ll encounter stretches of meandering paths, as well as gentle inclines and rugged terrain, adding an element of adventure to the experience. Proper footwear is advised, especially during wet weather, to navigate any uneven ground with ease.

As walkers traverse the circumference of the reservoir, they are treated to a symphony of sights and sounds from the surrounding wildlife. Birdwatchers will delight in the opportunity to spot a variety of avian species, including majestic buzzards soaring overhead, darting kestrels, and an array of waterfowl gracefully gliding across the reservoir's surface.
