Constructed in the 1970s and completed in 1975, the reservoir is managed by South East Water and is not only an essential utility but also a much-loved recreational space that attracts thousands of visitors each year.
The area is well known for its wide range of outdoor activities. Walking and cycling are especially popular, with a 12.5-mile route encircling the reservoir, offering scenic views of woodland, water and wildlife.
For those keen on water sports, Bewl Water offers facilities for kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing, sailing and rowing, with equipment hire and courses available during the warmer months. Fishing is another big draw, with the reservoir well stocked with trout and pike, and both fly and coarse fishing permitted under licence.
The site also hosts seasonal attractions such as an inflatable aqua park in the summer, as well as boat trips, school holiday events and family activity days. There are various food and drink options on site, including a café and seasonal kiosks, along with indoor and outdoor spaces for private hire, weddings and corporate events. Parking is available on site, and while it’s best reached by car, it’s not far from Tunbridge Wells and Wadhurst railway station.
Dogs are welcome in many areas, provided they are kept on leads, and picnic spots and open green spaces make it ideal for a relaxed day out. With a blend of nature, sport, and family-friendly amenities, Bewl Water is a versatile destination that offers something for everyone, from tranquil walks to adrenaline-fuelled activities, all set against a beautiful and peaceful rural backdrop.
