Bowlees visitor centre in the North Pennines

The Bowlees Visitor Centre, is a useful support location found near the Pennine way for when I come to attempt the Montane Spine Race.

Situated in the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in County Durham, England, serves as a gateway for exploring the stunning landscape and rich heritage of the area. Nestled amidst the picturesque countryside of Upper Teesdale near the village of Newbiggin, the visitor centre provides easy access to a multitude of outdoor activities, nature trails, and cultural sites.

The surrounding landscape boasts breath-taking natural beauty, characterised by cascading waterfalls, lush meadows, and rugged moorlands. Visitors can embark on scenic walks along the Teesdale Way or explore the nearby Bowlees Nature Reserve, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.

At Bowlees Visitor Centre, visitors can take advantage of various facilities aimed at enhancing their experiences. These include an information desk staffed by knowledgeable volunteers who can provide insights into local attractions, walking routes, and wildlife sightings. Additionally, the centre features a gift shop offering locally sourced crafts, souvenirs, and refreshments.

The visitor centre serves as an educational hub, offering interactive exhibits and interpretive displays that highlight the natural and cultural heritage of the North Pennines. Through engaging multimedia presentations and hands-on activities, visitors can learn about the geology, ecology, and human history of the area.

Throughout the year, Bowlees Visitor Centre hosts a variety of events, workshops, and guided walks catering to visitors of all ages and interests. From wildlife watching sessions to photography workshops and heritage talks, there's always something exciting happening at the centre.

Bowlees Visitor Centre is committed to promoting environmental sustainability and responsible tourism practices. Initiatives such as energy-efficient lighting, waste reduction, and eco-friendly transportation options are implemented to minimise the centre’s carbon footprint.

Accessibility is also a priority at Bowlees Visitor Centre, with facilities including wheelchair-friendly paths, accessible parking spaces, and designated rest areas. Staff are trained to assist visitors with disabilities and provide any necessary support.

Outside of the Montane Spine Race, Bowlees Visitor Centre offers a welcoming destination for nature enthusiasts, outdoor adventurers, and anyone seeking to explore the natural wonders of the North Pennines.
