The little book of big explorations – Jheni Osman
So the bottom line up front, is we really love this book - for its range, diversity of storytelling, and accessibility. You can pick it up in any chapter, read for a few minutes, and feel positive about embracing challenges.
It provides an interesting take on adventure and endeavour, and linguistically widens the term to show how previously unheard-of scientists, explorers, geographers, activists, and others, took risks to explore new areas, both socially, professionally, and personally, to change the world for the better.
In an era of social media ‘adventurers’, it’s refreshing to see such a highly researched book connect societal shifts with someone taking a risk before it was really understood by the public.
It features all kinds of adventure and adventurers: from ocean rowers and maritime expeditions; mountaineers (the first ascent of Mont Blanc was a particular favourite of ours!); remote jungle expeditions to improve cultural understanding and medical knowledge; space exploration (definitely something we’re keen to understand better) and many others – that really helped us to see the benefits of undertaking endeavour.
We’re already researching the author to find out if there are sequels planned for this wonderful book and can’t recommend it highly enough as a gift for a young person deciding on their life path, or anyone thinking seriously about career change, or their next steps in life.
