Verdict: Comfortable trainer-like boots with a semi-rigid sole, that are waterproof with a wide toe box to minimise blisters. They roughly match the stated size (i.e., a UK 12 feels like a UK 12).

The Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid Goretex boots are a popular hiking and backpacking boot designed for outdoor enthusiasts. They’re pretty ubiquitous now, and so with a cold Baltic winter to contend with, I decided to invest in a pair (which I’m hugely glad I did!).

The best parts about the boots, in my opinion, are:

The comfort and Fit: The boots are designed with a comfortable fit without being too constrained. As with all my boots, I buy a size bigger than my trainers to take into account swelling in my feet when I’m out on long days.

Waterproofing: The boots feature Gore-Tex waterproofing technology, which ensures that your feet stay dry even in wet conditions. This technology also allows the boots to be breathable, keeping your feet comfortable and dry during intense activity. They’re a god send when walking around in slushy snow!

Traction: The boots have a Contagrip outsole, which provides excellent traction on a variety of surfaces, including wet, icy, and slippery terrain. The sole is semi-rigid, meaning it’ll keep traction in snow, and soft / unstable terrain.

Durability: The boots are designed to withstand harsh outdoor conditions and are made with high-quality materials, including a protective toe cap and a durable, abrasion-resistant upper.

Weight: The boots weigh approximately 450g (for a men's size 8.5), making them a little heavier than trainers, but not as heavy as other boots I’ve got. I choose these for long and wet multi-day expeditions.
