Verdict: Great running trainers with a cool futuristic look, that come in a little more costly than most others.

The Cloudsurfers from the Swiss running brand "On" offer a unique experience for us as runners, combining innovative design with practical performance features.

One of the most distinguishing characteristics of the shoe is its patented Swiss CloudTec® system. The outsole is equipped with hollow pods, referred to as "clouds," which collapse on impact and expand during take-off. This design is intended to provide a sensation of spending more time in the air, enhancing the running experience by adding a sense of bounce and cushioning.

Unsurprisingly (given the design), we found that the Cloudsurfers feel comfortable during runs of various lengths, from shorter 5-kilometre runs to longer 20-kilometre outings that included some intervals

The shoe's cushioning and bounce were significant benefits, contributing to a positive running experience where we could focus on performance without being distracted by discomfort. The upper, knitted from a single piece of fabric, features strategically woven mesh that provides support in some areas while allowing for breathability in others. Additionally, the thin padding on the tongue was particularly appreciated, as it enhanced comfort by preventing the laces from digging into our feet when they swelled.

In terms of the look, we found the Cloudsurfer to have a cool futuristic appearance that puts them in more of the premium end of the market. The shoe’s design is characterised by its clean and precise construction, which we felt could even be considered a work of art due to its attention to detail. This adds a visual appeal that might attract runners who appreciate not just performance but also a stylish look in their athletic gear.

The shoes are not the lightest on the market, weighing in at 345 grams for a size 46, which may be a consideration for those of us who prefer ultra-lightweight shoes for racing or fast-paced runs. However, the overall comfort and cushioning seemed to outweigh this for us, as the performance benefits we experienced compensated for the slightly heavier weight.

Overall, we believe the Cloudsurfer is a well-designed shoe that provides a comfortable and responsive running experience, particularly for those of us who appreciate a cushioned and bouncy feel. While it excels in comfort, innovative design, and aesthetics, some of us may find its durability and weight less ideal depending on our running needs.
