Verdict: A classic ice axe that stands up to the job!

Whilst it’s only been used on some light chalk practice, the DMM fly ice axe is presented as a versatile, well-balanced tool that caters to the demands of various climbing environments, from steep ice to traditional mountaineering terrain.

Key features highlighted include the ergonomic rubber handle, designed for comfort and insulation in wet or dry conditions. The axe's ability to be equipped with optional hand rests and leashes accommodates diverse climbing techniques, making it suitable for both leashless climbing and more traditional styles. The redesigned pick, with carefully shaped teeth and a positive tip angle, enhances stability, penetration on ice, and secure placements while allowing for easy release.

Additionally, the Fly's construction emphasizes durability and strength, boasting a shaft made of high-strength aluminium alloy and T-rated integrity throughout the axe. The inclusion of double rivets and waterproof glue seals ensures extra strength and protection against corrosion.

Surprisingly, the axe's adaptability is a stand-out point, with its interchangeable pick system, allowing for easy replacement and setup variations, such as fitting a Raptor mountaineering pick or removing hand rests for better plunging. Ultimately, the DMM Fly is positioned as a reliable and adaptable ice axe suitable for a wide range of winter climbing situations, making it a preferred choice among mountaineers seeking an all-purpose tool.
