During a trip to explore Dartmoor, I got to visit the Duke of York pub located in the village of Iddesleigh in Devon, renowned its association with the acclaimed British author Michael Morpurgo, who often frequented the pub.

The Duke of York pub holds a special place in the history of "War Horse" as Morpurgo reportedly got the idea for the novel from a veteran he met in the pub who shared his experiences of World War I and the role of horses in the conflict.

He was intrigued by the idea of exploring World War I from the perspective of a horse and the relationships formed during the conflict. His novel, ‘WarHorse’ gained widespread acclaim and became a staple in children's literature, earning numerous awards, before becoming a film directed by Steven Spielberg, and released in 2011

The pub itself retains much of its traditional charm, with its thatched roof and cosy interior. It has become a popular destination for fans of Morpurgo's work, as well as visitors eager to experience a quintessential English pub in a picturesque rural setting.
